Gilbert is currently pursuing his MS in Public & Urban Policy with a graduate minor in Migration Studies at The New School. He earned a bachelors degree in Economics and Management from Uganda Christian University in Mukono, Uganda.
Prior to joining The New School, he worked extensively with forced migrants in Kampala and settlements across Uganda. He has also coordinated projects with civil society organizations in Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gilbert’s scholarship pursues the intersection of programming, research, and advocacy.
His research interests include examining how migrants participate in city-making and how urban policies either include or exclude them. He is also keen on examining urban social relations and democratic participation as they relate to the dictated cartography of urban space. Invoking urban ethnography as a methodology, he delves into how urban residents, including migrants, interact with infrastructure and technology in cities.
