URBAN WORLDS: CITIES, SPACES, AND MATERIALITIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY
A colloquium for Ph.D. students

The Laboratory for Urban Spatial and Landscape Research (Urban Space Lab) is pleased to announce the first URBAN WORLDS colloquium for Ph.D. students. We have selected 16 students from five universities to present their work in progress. The event takes place on Friday, November 14th and Saturday, November 15th, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m at The New School.
The colloquium showcases projects that explicitly address ‘urban’ questions. In this sense, urban spaces and landscapes are not simply treated as a backdrop for unfolding dramas that happen to take place there, but rather are constituent in their very formation. We are also interested in projects that explore the mutual constitution of the urban and the ‘not urban,’ that is, those scalar forms, institutions, spaces and territories that are not reducible to the urban, but rather are entangled with it, e.g., rurality, regions, the peri-urban mosaic, the nation, multilateral organizations, transnational corporations, zones of exception and exclusion, military and technological systems. Presentations will examine many aspects of urban life, thought, social relations, materiality, and technical forms, in a wide range of locations in the world.
Projects may be in any stage of development, from early theorizing to midstream reporting to nearing completion. This is meant to be a supportive environment, where presenters can bring problems and seek advice. Our goal is to establish an environment of mutual inquiry.
